The Iowa government is responsible for governing the state. The Iowa Constitution provides for three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial.
The executive branch of the Iowa government is responsible for carrying out the laws of Iowa. The head of the executive branch is the governor. The governor is elected by the people of Iowa and serves a four-year term. The lieutenant governor is also elected by the people of Iowa and serves as the head of the Senate.
The legislative branch of the Iowa government is responsible for making the laws of Iowa. The legislature is made up of two parts: the House and the Senate. The Iowa House of Representatives is responsible for introducing bills relating to taxes, spending, and borrowing; appropriating money to state departments and agencies; and impeachment proceedings. The Iowa Senate is responsible for confirming gubernatorial appointments; approving treaties; trying impeachments; and ratifying amendments to the Iowa Constitution.
The judicial branch of the Iowa government is responsible for interpreting the laws of Iowa. The supreme court is the highest in Iowa and is made up of nine justices. The justices are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. They serve eight-year terms.
The Iowa Constitution provides for a governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, auditor, treasurer, and attorney general. The Iowa Governor is responsible for carrying out the laws of Iowa; managing the state budget; and appointing judges, among other duties. The Lieutenant Governor of Iowa is elected on a ticket with the Governor and serves as President of the Iowa Senate. The Iowa Secretary of State is responsible for maintaining public records; overseeing elections, and supervising notaries public, among other duties.
